HONG KONG: A Hong Kong court will sentence pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong on Thursday in his second national security trial, which could see him jailed for life, as reported by the judiciary’s website. The website showed on Tuesday that a sentencing hearing was scheduled for Nov 5. Wong pleaded guilty to the collusion charges in September. He is already serving a jail term of almost five years for subversion and was due for release in early 2027. The 30-year-old former student leader is one of the most recognizable faces of the city’s democracy movement, which has since been quashed.

He was charged last year under a national security law that Beijing imposed on Hong Kong, a move condemned by rights groups. Wong rose to prominence during widespread protests over a decade ago. He was later involved in the huge pro-democracy rallies of 2019 that led to the law being imposed. Prosecutors said Wong, self-exiled activist Nathan Law and others asked foreign entities to seriously disrupt the making and implementation of laws or policies in Hong Kong and China. Foreign collusion can be punished with life imprisonment if the offense is found to be of a “serious nature”.

Wong’s lawyer has argued for a shorter sentence of three to 10 years. The lawyer observed that Wong has already spent around six years in prison for various offenses. Wong’s friends told AFP earlier this year that he remained “energetic” in detention, where he works out, plays the guitar and studies university courses. — AFP

The United States conducted limited military strikes against Iranian targets in the strategic Strait of Hormuz on Monday, a U.S. official confirmed, marking a significant escalation just days before the nation's midterm elections. The operation targeted Iranian surface-to-air missile systems, occurring as Tehran outlined plans to reopen the critical waterway and resume nuclear negotiations with Washington.

Alberta Tabled Controversial Riding Boundary Maps Amid Gerrymandering Accusations

Alberta’s contentious new electoral riding boundary proposals were released to the public on Monday, triggering immediate condemnation from Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi, who accused Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative government of attempting to rig the next election. The tabling of the maps sets the stage for a legislative debate and potential legal battles over the fairness of the redrawn districts.

Washington reports movement in Iran negotiations aimed at preventing escalation

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump signaled progress on Monday in talks with Iran to avoid a return to war, as Tehran reported “intensive” exchanges and offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz under strict conditions. The diplomatic signals came ahead of Tuesday’s US midterm elections, in which Trump’s Republican Party is trying to keep control of Congress amid voter dissatisfaction over the conflict and the soaring fuel prices it has caused.

Global failure to punish attacks leaves journalists at continuing risk

Every year on Nov 2, the world marks the Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI) as one of the most consequential dates in the history of freedom of expression. The UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/68/163 at its 68th session in 2013, recognising the far-reaching consequences of impunity, particularly for crimes committed against journalists.
