US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faces potential impeachment proceedings as Republican losses in the midterm elections weaken President Donald Trump’s political standing. White House insiders suggest Hegseth has become a primary target for blame within the administration following the party’s defeat in both chambers of Congress.

The Republicans lost control of the Senate, where Democrats gained at least seven seats, and the House of Representatives. The losses included defeats for Trump’s preferred candidates Ken Paxton in Texas and Darline Graham in South Carolina. Rising energy prices and resulting inflation are cited as key factors driving the Republican decline.

According to a White House insider quoted by the New York Post, senior staff members have turned against Hegseth. "I don't know if it's already been decided that he has to go," one aide said. Another source noted, "Someone has to take responsibility." A third added, "If your job title contains the word 'war,' you could be the one in the crosshairs."

Despite the internal pressure, Hegseth intends to remain in his post. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that the minister is "100 percent determined" to lead the Defense Department through the end of Trump’s term, dismissing Democratic threats as "fictitious witch hunts."

However, Democrats now hold the majority in both houses, enabling them to initiate impeachment. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, issued a stark warning: "Get yourself a lawyer." If the Senate also moves forward with proceedings, Hegseth could face a public trial.

Hegseth may have an escape route through a Senate appointment. Tennessee Governor-elect Marsha Blackburn will vacate her Senate seat upon taking office. With her support, Hegseth could be appointed to fill the vacancy, potentially shielding him from impeachment in the House.

Trump has publicly defended Hegseth, stating he is doing "very good work" and has no plans to fire him. However, Trump previously praised officials like Attorney General Pam Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem shortly before dismissing them, leaving Hegseth’s position uncertain.
