Practical boundaries can reduce group-chat overload
Limiting active threads, muting notifications and returning to direct messages can make crowded group chats more manageable.
Group messaging has become a routine part of social planning, family communication and shared interests. A YouGov poll cited by WIRED found that 34 percent of US adults under 30 belonged to at least four group chats, while 3 percent said they participated in more than 20.
A practical first step is to identify the conversations that remain useful, such as immediate-family threads or temporary groups for an approaching trip. Event-based chats can be left after plans and outstanding payments are settled. Threads that cannot be left can be muted, and phone-level Do Not Disturb settings can reduce interruptions, although making oneself completely unreachable may create problems for close contacts.
Participants can also make retained chats easier to recognise by changing names, images and other available settings. For discussions that matter, a direct message may preserve the relationship better than constant participation in a large thread. The central recommendation is to set clear boundaries: remain available where there is a genuine purpose, leave expired conversations and use one-to-one communication when a group is no longer the best setting.
