The United Kingdom will return to Greenwich Mean Time at 2am on Sunday, October 25, when clocks move back by one hour. The change ends British Summer Time and gives people an additional hour that night, while bringing sunset before 5pm.

British clocks advance at 1am on the final Sunday in March and retreat at 2am on the final Sunday in October. The weekend timing was selected to limit disruption to schools and businesses. Devices connected to network time usually update automatically, but some watches, vehicle clocks and kitchen appliances require manual adjustment.

The UK introduced daylight saving in 1916 during the First World War to extend useful daylight and conserve fuel. Benjamin Franklin proposed a related idea in 1784, and British builder William Willett later campaigned for clock changes until his death in 1915. Royal Museums Greenwich says about 70 countries use some form of daylight saving, particularly in Europe, North America and parts of South America and Australasia. Many countries near the equator do not change their clocks.
